Plumber, Drainer and Gasfitter Licences Explained

A plumbing licence in Queensland is one of two layers: an occupational licence for the person on the tools, and a contractor licence for the business carrying the job. The QBCC issues both.

The occupational licence shows the holder has the skills for the work. A contractor licence shows the business has the financial capacity and the training to run jobs properly.

Three classes cover the work itself:

  1. Plumber

covers plumbing work, apart from anything needing its own endorsement.

  2. Drainer

covers below-ground drainage, again apart from endorsed work.

  3. Gasfitter

gas work needs its own licence. Queensland lets a licensed gasfitter alone install, alter, repair, service, test or certify a gas system, its pipework and connections.

Regulated plumbing and drainage work falls into permit work, notifiable work and minor work. A licensed plumber or drainer must do all three. The QBCC says that protects the home, your health and your rights.

How a Plumbing Job Runs From Call to Finish

  1. 1

    You describe the fault

A call or the form starts the job. Tell us what's wrong, where, and how long it's been happening.

  2. 2

    We diagnose on site

The plumber inspects the fixture, follows the pipe run back, and names the cause before touching anything.

  3. 3

    You approve a fixed price

You get a fixed quote before any work starts, with flat-rate pricing and no hidden fees. Nothing goes ahead until you say yes.

  4. 4

    We do the work

The repair or installation goes ahead as quoted, with the site kept tidy while we work.

  5. 5

    We test and hand over

Taps run, toilets flush, drains flow. Then you receive whatever paperwork applies. You pay by card or EFTPOS on site, or ask about Fix now, pay later.

Paperwork and Inspections After a Job

Two bodies share oversight of plumbing work: the QBCC and the City of Brisbane council. The QBCC licenses plumbers, registers notifiable work and polices unlicensed jobs. The council assesses applications, issues permits and inspects.

What lands with you:

  1. A Form 4 copy

after notifiable work, for the person who booked the job. Missed out? The QBCC can supply one.

  2. A gas system compliance certificate

straight after gas work on a new installation or alteration, with a copy reaching the gas network operator inside five days.

  3. Register checks

the QBCC's online records let you confirm a licence, and an address search shows whether a Form 4 was filed for the property.

  4. Council inspection

you can ask for one whenever notifiable work is underway.

Notifiable work must meet the code requirements for that work. Everything installed has to be a product approved for plumbing or drainage use. Most products also need WaterMark certification before a licensed plumber can install them.

Call (07) 3524 7163

Does gas work need a separate licence?

Yes, gas work sits on its own licence class in Queensland, and only a licensed gasfitter may carry it out. Ask to see the gas work licence before the job starts; any gasfitter we send holds one.

Who inspects plumbing work in Bardon?

Council inspectors from the City of Brisbane check permitted plumbing work, and you can ask for an inspection of notifiable work at any point of the job. The QBCC issues licences and keeps the notifiable work register, and its online records show a plumber's licence status.

What can I do if plumbing work turns out faulty?

Raise it with the plumber first. If the work seems unlicensed, defective or non-compliant, or a Form 4 never arrived for notifiable work, you can lodge a complaint with the QBCC online.

Our run takes in Ashgrove, Red Hill, Paddington, Auchenflower, Toowong, Mount Coot-tha and The Gap, each with its own page. The full list is on our areas page.
